How I Learned of My Favorite Band: BLOC PARTY

Black and white

Bloc Party is my favorite band ever. I am completely obsessed about this group, and I’m more interested in you if you know who they are and actually listen to their music. I would have to say that my favorite song by Bloc Party would probably be “So Here We Are,” which is on their debut album, Silent Alarm.

I heard “So Here We Are” when I was 10 years-old. I was on vacation in Bangladesh when I first heard this song, watching MTV with my uncle. I can vividly remember the ethereal intro to the moving, surreal track and my uncle commenting, “Hmm, Bloc Party -never heard of them.”

Neither did I, so that was probably my reply to my uncle’s comment. When the song played, I hadn’t thought much of it. I was most likely not paying attention because my mind tends to go off to other places. So, a few weeks or months later, my brother and I were conversing about something, and then he mentioned Bloc Party.

“I know them!”

Eventually I started to listen and familiarize myself with more of their songs, and soon enough, I realized that no one else could ever take the position of being my favorite artist. Maybe when I was 9 I would’ve said The Vines and at age 10 my answer could’ve changed to Blink 182. In sixth grade I claimed The Killers were the best band ever. I was sort of experimenting with different sounds and listening to a bunch of stuff during seventh grade. But I’ve settled down with Bloc Party, and despite me seeming to have a lot of “phases,” I’d say that I’m sticking with these boys.

And “Blue Light” is definitely The Mixtape Song.
